You’ve booked your flights, your hotel is confirmed and your Vietnam e-visa has just landed in your inbox. But what exactly do you need to show the immigration officer when you land in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi or Da Nang? A missing document or a small mistake on your e-visa can mean extra questions, delays — or in the worst case, being refused boarding.

Quick Checklist: What to Bring

A missing document or a small mistake on your e-visa can mean extra questions, delays — or in the worst case, being refused boarding. This checklist covers every document you need at Vietnam airport immigration in 2026, plus the most common mistakes and how to get through the airport as fast as possible. Let’s look at each one in detail.

  • ✅ Passport valid for at least 6 months, with blank pages
  • ✅ Approved Vietnam e-visa (printed + digital copy)
  • ✅ Digital Arrival Card QR code (mandatory at Tan Son Nhat – SGN)
  • ✅ Return or onward ticket
  • ✅ Hotel booking / address of stay in Vietnam
  • ✅ Travel insurance (recommended)
  • ✅ Some cash or a bank card for your first days

1. A Valid Passport

Your passport is the foundation of everything. Before you fly, check that:

  • It is valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into Vietnam.
  • It has at least 2 blank pages for entry and exit stamps.
  • It is in good condition — no torn pages, water damage or detached cover.
  • It is the same passport you used to apply for your e-visa.
Important

If you renewed your passport after applying, your e-visa is linked to the old passport number and will not be valid. You’ll need to apply for a new e-visa.

2. Your Approved Vietnam E-Visa

The e-visa is the standard entry route for most travelers. Since August 2023, it has been open to all nationalities and allows stays of up to 90 days, with single or multiple entry.

What to check on your e-visa:

Before you travel, compare your e-visa carefully with your passport:

• Full name (exact spelling, same order as the passport)

• Date of birth and nationality

• Passport number

• Entry date and validity period

• Port of entry (the airport where you will land)

• Single or multiple entry

An issued e-visa cannot be edited, so if you spot an error, you’ll need to apply again. That’s why it’s worth checking every detail before submitting your application.

  • Print 1–2 copies and keep a PDF on your phone. Some airlines ask for a paper copy at check-in.
  • Apply through the official Vietnam Immigration portal only — beware of look-alike websites charging extra fees.
  • Apply at least 1–2 weeks before your trip; official processing takes about three working days, but holidays such as Tết can slow things down.

3. The Digital Arrival Card (New in 2026)

This is the step many travelers miss. Since April 15, 2026, foreign nationals arriving at Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) in Ho Chi Minh City must complete an online pre-arrival declaration before going through immigration.

What is it?

It replaces the old paper arrival form. You enter your passport details, visa information, flight number and address of stay online, and you receive a QR code that is scanned at immigration.

Key facts:

• Where: on the official portal, prearrival.immigration.gov.vn.

• When: within 72 hours before your arrival — the system doesn’t accept earlier submissions.

• Cost: free of charge.

• It does not replace your visa — you still need your e-visa or a valid exemption.

• Transit passengers who don’t enter Vietnam are reported to be exempt.

The requirement was first rolled out in Ho Chi Minh City, and the portal already includes fields for other entry points, suggesting a wider rollout. Our advice: wherever you land, check the portal before your flight and complete the form if it’s available for your airport.

Connecting through Saigon?

Even if your final destination is Hanoi or Da Nang, if you connect through Ho Chi Minh City on an international-to-domestic itinerary, you clear immigration at SGN and need the card.

4. Return or Onward Ticket

Immigration officers and airlines may ask for proof that you will leave Vietnam before your e-visa expires. Keep your return or onward flight confirmation (or bus/train ticket to a neighboring country) easily accessible on your phone.

Make sure your departure date is within your e-visa’s validity period. Overstaying is a serious offense in Vietnam and can lead to fines or a ban on re-entering the country.

5. Hotel Booking or Address of Stay

You’ll need the address of your first accommodation for your Digital Arrival Card, and an officer may ask where you’re staying. Keep your hotel confirmation or the full address of your host ready.

Good to know: in Vietnam, hotels and accommodations register foreign guests with the local authorities, so they’ll ask for your passport at check-in.

6. Recommended Extras

These aren’t always checked at immigration, but they make your arrival much smoother:

Travel insurance documents and Vietnamese dong cash for arrival

  • Travel insurance covering medical care — strongly recommended for any trip to Vietnam.
  • Some cash (USD or Vietnamese dong) for a taxi, SIM card or snacks at the airport.
  • Passport photos — useful if you need to apply for other documents locally.
  • Contact details of your hotel, tour operator or fast track agent.
  • A pen — handy if a paper form is still requested.

  1. 1Leave the aircraft and follow the “Arrival / Immigration” signs.
  2. 2Go to the immigration counters for foreign passport holders. (If you have a visa approval letter for visa on arrival, go first to the “Landing Visa” counter.)
  3. 3Hand over your passport, printed e-visa and, if required, show your Digital Arrival Card QR code.
  4. 4Answer any questions briefly — purpose of visit, length of stay, hotel.
  5. 5Get your entry stamp and check that the dates are correct before leaving the counter.
  6. 6Collect your luggage and pass through customs.
  7. 7Exit to the arrivals hall — welcome to Vietnam!

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Common Vietnam e-visa mistakes travelers make at airport immigration

Common Vietnam e-visa mistakes travelers make at airport immigration

  • ❌ Name or passport number mismatch between your e-visa and passport.
  • ❌ Wrong entry date — arriving before the start date on your e-visa.
  • ❌ Wrong port of entry — landing at a different airport than the one on your e-visa.
  • ❌ Using an unofficial visa website — higher fees and sometimes invalid documents.
  • ❌ Forgetting the Digital Arrival Card when landing at SGN.
  • ❌ Single entry e-visa for a trip with a side visit to Cambodia or Laos — choose multiple entry if you’ll leave and come back.
  • ❌ Passport expiring within 6 months.
